In response to "Adbusters: American Psychosis", I believe that social media could be contributing to larger social problems as well as the solution for some. The fascination with celebrities and examples similar to them does in fact take away from much larger social problems. However I believe that the article is taking this to an extreme. The article talks about issues as big as class warfare, capitalism, or national debt, and as these are important issues I don't think that celebrities take away from their attention. The audience that idolizes the "illusion" of celebrities are not the same general audience of one that keeps up with world affairs and such. The way celebrities contribute to the social problems, I believe, is do to the fact that celebrities are almost immune to the law. When celebrities use drugs and violence it makes their followers want to experiment with that stuff as well, which will get them in big trouble. Thats how I believe social media and celebrities create larger social problems.
Social media contributes to helping understanding (and fixing) large social problems as well. News teams, apps, etc. report large scale problems to inform the public. Without this reporting the american public wouldn't even understand what was going on in this world (EX. capitalism, national debt). So before the author of this article goes on bashing social media he should think about all the benefits.
